Dusky Grouse

Description: A fairly common but elusive resident of mountain forests; impossible to guarantee, but you could run into one almost anywhere. Unlike other grouse in Colorado, Blue does not display on a communal lek, but rather within individual territories. A good strategy for looking for this species is to drive roads through good habitat early in the morning; it is often possible to stumble on one crossing the road. Some good sites to check include Route 80 north of Hayden; Jensen and Oak Ridge SWAs; the Black Canyon of the Gunnison; Mueller State Park.
